“With whispers and rustles of whip grass and silence, the rainbow gums stood resolute and quiet. The red earthen plane was disturbed by my hand while the soil beneath remained cool to the touch. My mind became clear as I began to stand, for I was alone with the land you see. I was one with the world and it one with me.I stepped from the shade and lay down with a sigh, because me and earth had become such a match. So now I will stay in the home of gumtrees, with my friends in the desert, at home finally.”
My work speaks to my indigenous heritage and plays on my emotional response to my presence in the Australian environment, although each ecosystem is so different in their own vibrancy, I find a profound admiration and connection deep within my soul for the land. Be it the bush or the desert I feel as though I am simply drawn to my surroundings and I am constantly absorbing the history and significance of each area.
I have portrayed this naive yearning using simple but bold brushstrokes and blocks of rich colour. My work seeks to represent the beauty of both the lush gum forests and the rich earthen colours of the outback desert and how the both compliment each other’s existence while still being an important part of Australia’s identity on their own.
